For regular health and medical care you must register the whole family with a GP (General Practitioner). Explain to any health professional that you visit that you are new to the area or to New Zealand, and need help getting health services.

The public health system is free for people under 18 years, but does not cover dental costs for adults. Dental services are readily available for reasonable charges. Some dental care can be covered through a private insurance policy.

The Nelson Region Hospice Trust offers residential and home support hospice care.
ACC is a government programme that provides personal injury cover for all New Zealand
citizens, residents and temporary visitors. www.acc.co.nz.
Nelson is well served with aged residential care facilities and privately owned retirement homes throughout the region. Private providers also offer community support services for aged care, mental health and disability.
Nelson has a number of practitioners of alternative therapies and two centres in the city where a range of these practitioners are based.
